Winter Wonderland of New York
The holiday season begins in November with the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. From then on, the city is alive with celebrations, events and many wintertime activities that revolve around the holidays. Perhaps the biggest winter event in New York is New Year's Eve, where millions of people gather at Times Square. This is such a popular event that many international visitors will book their cheap flights to New York months in advance. More than 1 billion people watch the New Years Eve event on television and more than 1 million actually attend the event. The winter wonderland continues long after the holiday season has passed. In upstate New York, there are many winter carnivals that include cross-country skiing, figure skating, snowmobile races, ice sculpting, parades and outdoor concerts. One of the most popular winter carnivals is The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival which is held every February. The carnival runs for 10 days and provides endless entertainment for the entire family. In March, there is a Mardi Gras and torch parade that are the highlights of the carnival held at Holiday Valley ski resort. When the cold weather arrives, New York comes alive. The main city attracts millions of tourists who want to be a part of the annual Christmas Tree lighting at Rockefeller Center. The skating rinks that are located throughout Central Park are full with fun and laughter every night. One of the event highlights of the winter is the Radio City show. This is where the world renowned Rockettes will dance across the stage and perform the Christmas Spectacular. The show runs from November through January and is a great event for people of all ages. For travelling families with a sense of adventure, there are numerous ski resorts in New York. These resorts will allow you fun in the snow and will create many memories that will last for years to come. In addition to some great ski slopes, many of the resorts have sleigh rides, skating, tubing and snowboarding. Having the opportunity to participate in these activities while being in festive New York during the winter is a wonderful way to spend a family holiday. Winters in New York can be enjoyed at indoor events and activities as well. Some of the best attractions include the New York Aquarium and the Flushing Meadows Corona Park Pool and Rink.
